Dual Quotes: Wisconsin vs. Iowa

Jan. 15, 2016
Wisconsin vs. Iowa
Kohl Center - Madison, Wis.

UW Head Coach Barry Davis
"I see some things going on with certain guys that are moving forward and improving a lot, but it's not there yet. Other guys too, you can't give up position. It's not easy to win if you give up position at this level, you're going to get beat. Guys like (Andrew) Crone and Ricky (Robertson) did a good job, but made some mistakes. Again, it's going to come down to if you continue to get to hard tied. If you don't get to your ties, you're going to get beat.

"Tonight, they beat us to the punch, and some guys gave in to that. You can't do that. Other guys fought, they did a good job. There's improvements, I see things happening yet, but we're just not quite there yet. But I know we can do the work. We've got lift tomorrow, we go back to work, talk to the guys about it, stay committed and move forward."

On whether there is added pressure being undefeated:
"No, I don't really think of the record, honestly. I could slip up and I'm not really worried about it because at this point in the season, I have good wins and when it comes to Big Ten's, I'd be the one- or two-seed that's kind of how I look at it. If I lose, it's not that big of a deal, I guess I'd just have to get back on track. It would almost wake me up in a way, but right now I think that I'm wrestling well and I think that I just need to keep that going. I'm not afraid to lose, that was kind of the point of that."

On his performance this year compared to years past:
"Obviously I'm an upperclassman so I kind of have some experience, but I think I'm not quite at my potential yet. I haven't quite wrestled my best. My shots don't really feel right, I'm working on stuff. In comparison to the last few years, I think I'm a smarter wrestler. I've learned how to handle matches more, but I think I need to open up more. In my redshirt year, I was wrestling my best because I had no fear of losing. I was a young kid, I just went out there and wrestled. If I lost, I lost to a returning All-American and it didn't really matter because he's supposed to beat me. But now it's not that there's more pressure, but I'm aware of it."

On his practice partners:
"I practice with the guys around my weight, so TJ Ruschell, Ricky Robertson, Ryan Christensen, Seth Liegel, he's a really good drill partner, and then I've been going with Coach Ruschell a lot more. He was a national team member, he's the elite of the elite and if I can go with him I feel like I can go with anybody. He's been huge for me this year and I'm just trying to get as many matches with him as I can. He gives me a new feel. He's very good, he's a great drill partner, workout partner and he'll stop if I do something wrong and he'll correct me. He really knows wrestling and he's been great for me this year."

On drilling with multiple people:
"There's different styles. Ricky's really slick, he's really technical. Ryan Christensen is really strong and physical. Coach Ruschell is a mix of both. It's really helpful to have different looks and different feels coming from every guy."

On how he would define his style:
"Calculated. I am aware of the time and the point and what I need to do. When you're with other guys not ranked as high as you, they tend to try to slow the match down. Then I really have to pick my spots because they're waiting for me to make a mistake. I feel like I'm doing the same thing, so I have to create action and kind of force my stuff on them. I think you saw that in the Penn State match, where I let him dictate the match and it almost cost me the match. Today getting that first takedown in that first period was big. It forced him, because he's down in points, forced him to come to me, open my stuff up, and it worked out.
"Iowa style is brawling and coming at you. I thought that he might do that, but I found out in the first minute that he wasn't really committed to his attacks. I knew that he was going to take almost half-shots, creating action so I waited for his half-shot and he set himself up the where he hit a half-shot and I could go with my single leg and I knew that, I thought about it in the match, 'I think this is what he's going to do,' and it worked out for me."

On the team performance and his individual performance:
"We didn't wrestle well. There were some close matches and some good things to take away from the dual , but as an individual it's what I wanted. Wrestling's an individual sport, which is really nice because if you win, you can look at yourself and be satisfied. But as a team, there were a lot of things we need to work on, like some improvements with pace and intensity. They came in here and they were stingier than us. I think we need to readdress what our strategy is going into a match and look at it as a learning experience."

On what he took away from the match personally:
"I think I controlled pretty much every aspect of the match. He got away, I rode him and took him down, I defended his shots. On a guy like that, I should probably work harder on tops, almost open up more to where I could score more. But there was no need to open up where I might get into some danger or to risk giving up points for my team. There's definitely room for improvement, I'm not wrestling my best yet, but I'm very satisfied with my win tonight."
