Wisconsin vs. Michigan State

Head Coach Bobbie Kelsey

Opening Statement:
"Obviously we took another one on the chin here against a great Michigan State team, they're a very talented team, there's a lot of offensive firepower on their side. We did some good things in the game, we had some spots where we were executing and getting shots we wanted. I think the biggest thing is that we lacked on the rebounding and they got ahold of some balls that we should've probably gotten. We were pretty even on the free throws, probably should make some more of ours but all-in-all this is a tough team. They're an NCAA team, plus they have (Aerial) Powers, who's kind of a one-woman wrecking machine. She's hard to cover because she's six-foot, she has power, she can shoot the 3-pointers, shoot the pull-ups, she can pass, she can go to the basket, she can rebound, she can play defense, she does everything. So when you have to double up on her, some other people get loose and that's what kind of happened a couple times. But we're going to keep fighting. We're not going to hang our heads, we're going to keep going, and we'll get some of these games."

On struggling in the second quarter:
"I just think that they asserted themselves and kind of got some looks at the basket. We may have had a defensive breakdown here and there, but I thought we had some good looks. The difference is you just have to make those little shots right around the basket. I know Michala (Johnson) had some one-on-ones and got her feet tangled up a little bit, but we're trying to get the ball to our two bigs, which is Nicole (Bauman) and Mic. We needed Mic to get going a little more today, and I know she feels like she could've done more, she was 4-for-10, and she usually makes her shots because in the last game she had these same shots and she knocked them down."

On allowing too many rebounds:
"They were getting second and third looks, we'd take care of them on the first try but then they'd run right through you and get the ball so you have to box out. That happened several times, I'm not sure how many times, but it happened at least three times that I can remember. Or we'd come off somebody and then we'd get lost—cause you gotta double somewhere, you know, to make a one-on-one against Hines. We came over a couple times and got it, but then if she misses or somebody shoots it now you have to go box out the kid that you left and usually she's right underneath the basket. But there's no excuse, that's 26 rebounds. So that happened maybe four times, but the other times—we'll continue to work on boxing out, but until we really understand how important it is, you're going to miss some anyway, but those are the ones you know you can get so you really have to turn and push back. So some of it's technique, some of it's awareness, some of it's quickly turning, it's a number of different things."

On what makes Powers special
"I mean she's definitely one of the best players in the Big Ten. I think the best thing she can do is she can pull-up, her shot is very high—nice and over her head—so it's hard to get a hand up if they can shoot it that high. Plus she's quick, she can handle the ball, and she's got a big body. She can basically do it all, so guarding her you have to try and do the best you can but she was on tonight. She hit almost everything she shot so there's not a lot you can do about that but try harder and try and make her take those tough shots—but tonight she did make those tough shots."

On having too many turnovers:
"Yeah, take care of the ball a little bit better, Powers had a few of the same steals in a row. When we're trying to get it to Michala, I think it was pretty obvious and they realized that so she was able to get those passes, so we needed to use pass-fakes and realize that the first time she got that steal."

On the atmosphere and the crowd:
"I mean, when we go to away games they have pretty good atmosphere's so it was kind of just nice to have that atmosphere here for once, it being the Think Pink game. And it was tough, but we've played in it before so that wasn't anything new for our team."

On why they struggled from the field:
"I'm not sure why, I think we got good looks but we just have to finish. There's nothing really more that I can say. The ball has to go in the basket."

Michigan State Head Coach Suzy Merchant

Opening statement:
"What a great crowd first at foremost, I would like to say that about Wisconsin besides what you had to face on court. A Sunday afternoon game here with that kind of crowd, it certainly was intimidating. I've never seen the wristbands situation and that was a really neat atmosphere. I don't know what marketing team came up with that but kudos to them because that was a really neat thing. So it was tough, it's always a tough place to play and then you add the crowd in there and they were extremely loud. There was times when we couldn't even hear what we were trying to do out there and call plays so I give them a lot of credit. I thought (Nicole) Bauman was extremely tough as always, really set the tone in the first half and kind of put her team on her back.  Dakota (Whyte) got away from us again in the second half, so that was challenging certainly for us. I thought we played a good floor game all away the round, both ends of the floor. Obviously it set the tone of Aerial (Powers) in the first half just really competing using our screens extremely well when she hits them it's a fun thing to watch as a coach that's for sure."

On Michigan State's second period adjustments:
"I think our biggest thing is that we want to play both ends of the floor. We made some adjustments maybe in that second period on some of their cuts and tight curls, things like that but for the most part it was all Aerial and our team just sort of stepping up at both ends of the floor. The basket gets a little bit harder so shots are a little harder to make when you're putting pressure on them and scoreboard situation you know scoreboard shots are a lot tougher when you're down so we felt like we could put out foot on the gas a little bit and open that up a little bit and then maybe we could get some breathing room."

On trying to prevent Wisconsin from making a comeback:
"They got away from us in third. We talked a lot about that with Wisconsin. They're just a team that doesn't quit and they never go away. It doesn't matter what the score is, I know we've seen them in different situations. They've been up, they've been where they had to come back. They've had like 15-8 and now 15-18 and have a shot at the buzzer to tie it, so we know they're not going to come back so our second half focus was really about efficiency. I was disappointed in the third quarter but I give Wisconsin a lot of credit. They were really attacking us and we had several foul situations where they stopped the clock and put free points on the board and that was one thing we didn't want them to be able to do so we sort of transitioned from a not so good third quarter to being able to tighten up enough in the fourth quarter, and I thought we did a much better job of attacking the paint and getting Aerial a few more touches in that fourth quarter."
