ORLANDO, Fla. – There is no shortage of Badgers present at the annual Major League Soccer combine this year. Wisconsin men's soccer head coach
John Trask is coaching at this year's combine, while seniors
Chris Mueller and
Mark Segbers were both invited to compete at the elite event.
Sixty NCAA Division I college players were invited to participate at the 2018 MLS Adidas Player Combine in Orlando. The league's annual combine is being held from Jan. 11-17 with representatives from all 23 MLS clubs scouting the top college prospects ahead of the Jan. 19 MLS SuperDraft in Philadelphia.
Trask is coaching for the third time at the combine and has a rich history with the MLS after serving as an assistant coach for the Miami Fusion, D.C. United and FC Dallas.
"It's an honor to be out here in Orlando helping to coach some of the most talented athletes in the country in such an elite event," Trask said. "It's even more great to have two Wisconsin players invited to participate.
Chris Mueller and
Mark Segbers are two very special and talented players and it's exciting for them to be here and show the world what they're made of."
Mueller was named one of the top five players to watch in the combine by the MLS and
signed a senior deal with the organization already.
"This whole process has really been so much fun," Mueller said. "I'm trying to soak in the experience while it lasts because I know it's going to be over before I know it. Going to the combine is going to be an awesome experience and I'm looking forward to competing again with players from all around the country."
Additionally, TopDrawerSoccer.com ranked Mueller No. 4 on the list of top 50 players available in this year's draft.
Segbers, a two-time All-Big Ten second-team selection, capped off an illustrious career as a Badger with five goals, seven assists and 17 total points in his senior season. In his career, he played in 77 games, tallied 16 goals, 22 assists, 54 points and played a grand total of 6,472 minutes in the Cardinal and White.
Mueller is playing for Team Tango, Segbers is playing for Team Predator and Trask is coaching Team Predator.
A committee of MLS coaches and NCAA D1 coaches from every conference selected the invitees, all of whom completed their college eligibility this season. Further invitees, including Generation adidas signings and non-college players, will be announced in coming weeks.
