Terrific Taylor: Amann breaks school record in Big Apple

Senior pole vaulter breaks her own school best at Dr. Sander Invitational

NEW YORK – On the big stage in the Big Apple, Wisconsin women's track and field standout Taylor Amann didn't disappoint, breaking her own school record in the pole vault on the first day of the Dr. Sander Invitational at The Armory.

Amann soared 13 feet, 11 1/4 inches to topple her previous school best of 13-9 1/2 set at last year's Big Ten meet. It marked the seventh-straight indoor pole vault competition that Amann has won and her third victory of the 2018 indoor season. The Hartland, Wisconsin native leads the Big Ten Conference in the event while her mark ranks ninth in the country.

Teammate Jane McCurry finished fifth in the event with a mark of 12-3 1/2.

Fellow senior Georgia Ellenwood clocked a time of 8.61 seconds in the preliminary round of the 60 hurdles awarding her a spot in the finals. Ellenwood then finished seventh overall with a time of 8.52, a personal-best mark for the All-American.

The 500 meters proved to be a successful event for Bianca Stubler. The freshman sprinter exploded past the competition at the last second to win the final heat of the event. Stubler's 1:14.28 finish earned her the gold in the event.  Haley Lubow finished 11th in the event with a time of 1:18.06.

Gabrielle DesRosiers captured herself a new personal record in the 60 meters. Chicago-native raced to the line in 7.68 seconds which awarded the sophomore a 19th-place finish.

On the men's side, four Badgers placed in the preliminary round of the 60 hurdles. Trent Nytes finished 13th overall with a time of 8.47, while teammate Zach Lorbeck clocked in at 8.52 to place 15th. Paul Afflitto was close behind in 16th in 8.57 while Sawyer Smith crossed the line in 8.75.

In the men's 60 meters, senior Corbin Ellis finished in 15th overall with a time of 6.97, while Alex Teague clocked in at 7.05.

The Badgers will return to action Saturday for the second day of the Dr. Sander Invitational as action for UW begins at 8:30 a.m. CT. Fans can watch the meet on RunnerSpace+ while a tape-delayed version of the broadcast will air on NBCSN at 3 p.m. CT.
