McDonald runs world-leading time in 5000 meters to book spot at Commonwealth Games
CARRARA, Australia – Wisconsin men's track and field standout Morgan McDonald won his first senior national title on Thursday at the 2018 Australian National Championships and Nominations Trial thanks to a stellar run in the 5000 meters.
McDonald crossed the line in 13 minutes, 19.05 seconds, a world-leading time, to book his ticket for the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia in April.
"I can't believe the time, it's a quick time I'm super pumped with that," McDonald said. "I'll take it every day of the week."
McDonald made a great move with less than 400 meters to go, moving from fourth to first to claim the national title thanks to a final lap of 56.5.
"I felt like I was dropping off a little bit at times tonight but I switched myself back on and thought 'I've got to stay with these guys if I want a shot at that team' and and I was able to stay with them to the end," McDonald said. "The finishing kick is not something I work on per se but it's something I know I've got in my little bag of tricks.
"I'm always confident when it comes down to it that I'm going to be able to finish strong. That's where my mindset was."
McDonald will compete in the 5000 meters at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on Saturday, April 7.
