Canada advances to semifinal round with shutout win

GANGNEUNG, South Korea – Team USA was knocked out of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games Tuesday night in a 3-2 shootout loss at the Czech Republic in the quarterfinal round.

Tony Granato, assistant coach Chris Chelios and Team USA took a 1-0 lead in the first period, but had to come back from a 2-1 deficit in the second to knot the game at two apiece. The teams battled through a scoreless third period and overtime frame, then competed in a five-round shootout. The Czech Republic, who won Group A to earn a bye into the quarterfinal round, went on to win the shootout, 1-0.

This morning, Team Canada clinched a spot in the semifinals in a tense 1-0 victory over Finland with its lone goal from Maxim Noreau coming early in the third period. Despite changing netminders midway through the game due to injury, Canada earned its second-straight shutout of the tournament to advance.

Team Canada, featuring former Badgers Rene Bourque and Cody Goloubef, takes on Germany, who upset Sweden in overtime in its quarterfinal, at 6:10 a.m. CT on Friday morning in the semifinals.
