After an outstanding performance this weekend, the sophomore collects Big Ten honors
MADISON, Wis. – Men's track and field student-athlete Oliver Hoare was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week by the conference after participating in a record-breaking performance in the Distance Medley Relay at the Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday.
This is the first time that the sophomore has received the honors from the conference, but Hoare has had his fair share of successes during his time as a Badger. The 2017 Big Ten Cross Country Champion was a beast in the fall during the cross country season and now he is taking his talents to the track.
This past weekend the Badgers sent a distance medley relay team to Notre Dame, looking to qualify for the upcoming NCAA indoor meet. Hoare rounded out the race in the mile after being led by Joe Hardy in the 1200 meters, Corbin Ellis in the 400 meters and Eric Brown in the 800 meters. The team's time of 9 minutes 27.72 seconds is the fastest in school history, ranks No. 3 in the NCAA this year and No. 10 in NCAA history. Hoare anchored the race with a phenomenal mile run of 3:54.04 to secure the team's record-setting time.
Hoare already holds the No. 6 fastest spot in school history the 3000 meters and his name is now featured alongside Hardy, Ellis, and Brown as the fastest in the DMR.
Hoare and the Badgers are heading to Geneva, Ohio for the 2018 Big Ten Indoor Championships at the SPIRE Institute this weekend. The competition is set to begin with the men's heptathlon 60 meters at 9 a.m. (CT) on Friday morning.
