Six Badgers prep for NCAA Indoor Championships

UW will send a pack of record breaking athletes to national meet

MADISON, Wis. – Six members of the Wisconsin men's track and field team will head to College Station, Texas, on March 9-10 to compete at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Trent Nytes, Zach Lorbeck, Oliver Hoare, Corbin Ellis, Joe Hardy and Eric Brown will all make the trip down south to showcase their talents on the national stage. A series of top performances at the Big Ten Championships and a record-setting distance medley relay earned these six Badgers a ticket to the final indoor meet of the season.

Wisconsin is sending two multi-event athletes, Trent Nytes and Zach Lorbeck, who stole the show in the heptathlon at the Big Ten meet. Nytes won the event with a score of 5,810, also earning him the No. 3 spot on UW's top-10 list. Nytes is one of only six athletes to break the 5800-point barrier this year and ranks sixth nationally heading into the indoor meet.

Lorbeck, a redshirt sophomore, claimed fourth place with another record-setting score of 5,663 points at the conference meet.  This total also earned Lorbeck a spot on UW's top ten list coming in at No. 6 in program history, and his score also currently ranks No. 13 in the country. Wisconsin is one of only two schools to send multiple heptathletes to the NCAA indoor meet.

Sophomore distance runner Oliver Hoare also had an outstanding weekend at the conference meet. Hoare swept the distance events, winning both the 3000 meters and 5000 meters to earn his third Big Ten title of the academic year. The sophomore's time of 7 minutes 51.69 seconds in the 3000 meters currently ranks 11th in the nation. Hoare will also run the anchor leg of the distance medley relay after running an anchor leg of 3:54.05 to help the team to finish with a total time that currently ranks No. 5 in the NCAA this year and No. 10 in NCAA history.

Corbin Ellis, Joe Hardy and Eric Brown will round out the squad competing in the distance medley relay in College Station. The team finished with a record breaking time of 9 minutes 27.72 seconds to take over the position of fastest in UW history. Hardy started the Badgers off with a 2 minute 57 second split in the 1200-meter leg of the race before Ellis ran a 400-meter leg of 47.6 seconds. Ellis handed the baton off to Brown, who finished the 800 leg in 1:47.7 before handing it off to Hoare. It marks the first time UW has sent a distance medley relay squad to NCAA indoors since 2012.

The heptathletes will kick off competition for the Badgers on Friday starting at 12:00 p.m. followed by the DMR team competing at 8:45 p.m. (CT).

On Saturday, Nytes and Lorbeck start action at 4 p.m. and Hoare will compete for the Badgers running the 3000 meter at 6:10 p.m. (CT) on Saturday.
