Badgers open upper deck for volleyball

MADISON, Wis. — For the first time since 2007, sections of the upper deck of the UW Field House will be open for fans beginning in the 2018 volleyball season. The new sections, which will all be general admission, will raise the capacity of the facility to 7,052, an increase of 1,040 from the previous capacity.

"'If you open it, they will come' is something that I've heard for the past five years," head coach Kelly Sheffield said. "I am so excited to be at a point where we are going to be permanently opening up the upper deck. This is something we've strived for quite a while now. Now the challenge becomes selling out every one of our matches when the capacity is over 7,000.
"Having fans up to the rafters right over the court will be an incredible environment to be in and I know our team is excited for that to happen. We want to continue to grow our fan base and showcase what an awesome sport volleyball is, especially Big Ten volleyball. Getting 1,000 more fans in the building is absolutely fantastic!"
The six sections that will be open in the upper deck are EE, FF and GG, center court on the east side, and QQ, RR, and SS, center court on the west side.
"We're excited about the need to open the upper decks," said senior associate athletic director Jason King. "Last season really cemented the need to open the upper deck when we sold out 14 of 15 matches, including several before the season even started. The athletic department is excited to make improvements to the Field House for the team and our fans."
For the past two seasons, Wisconsin has set attendance records in the Field House. In 2017, UW drew 95,680 fans over 16 matches for an average of 5,980 fans per match, which ranked third nationally. The Badgers sold a record 4,885 season tickets last season, including 2,350 reserved seats.
Due to the increased demand for reserved seats and based on feedback from ticket holders, six new reserved seating sections will be available in 2018.
Two new Prime Reserved sections, in sections F and R, will offer nearly 600 center courtside seats for dedicated fans. In addition, six new reserved seating sections in the first balcony in E, F and G on the east side and Q, R and S on the west side will up the number of reserved seats to 2,846. The increase will up the total number of reserved seats to 3,418.
