  • Coached eight All-American goaltenders (Julian Baretta, Roy Schultz, Dean Anderson, Curtis Joseph, Duane Derksen, Kirk Daubenspeck, Bernd Brückler, Brian Elliott) and a ninth (Marc Behrend), who was two-time NCAA Tournament MVP
  • His goalies won 19 All-WCHA honors and were twice finalists for the Hobey Baker Award (Elliott and Derksen) for the national player of the year.
  • Coached six goaltenders who went on to play in the NHL (Joseph, Elliott, Behrend, Jim Carey, Terry Kleisinger and Mike Richter), including four who hold NHL team records (Elliott, Joseph, Carey, Richter)
  • Two potential Hockey Hall of Famers in Joseph and Richter; Richter in already a member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame)
  • His goaltenders went on to win one Olympic gold medal (Joseph) and two silver medals (Richter)
  • One of his goaltenders (Carey) went on to win the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goalie
  • Spent 10-plus years doing color commentary for Badger hockey on the radio and TV
  • Started the boys’ hockey program and led Madison Memorial High School teams to two consecutive undefeated seasons, two state championships, and two runner-up finishes in his last four years of coaching
