UW Madison Chancellor 1987-1993
First Woman Names Chancellor of a Big Ten Instiution
Oversaw the University of Wisconsin during a time of renaissance for the UW Athletic Department
Hired Pat Richter as UW Director of Athletics on December 15, 1989.
With Richter, was instrumental in the hiring of Barry Alvarez as UW's Head Football Coach
Left UW in 1993 to become the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Bill Clinton
Awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2008
