- Penney became the first UW player to earn back-to-back first-team All-Big Ten honors (2002-03) since Ab Nicholas in 1951-52
- Honorable mention AP All-American as a senior in 2003
- 2003 NABC District 11 first-team selection in 2003; second-team selection in 2002
- Helped lead Badgers to 2002 and 2003 Big Ten titles (first back-to-back titles since 1923-24)
- Member of the 2000 Final Four team
- 2003 Academic All-Big Ten
- Earned five career Big Ten Player of the Week awards, which at the time was a school record
- 2003 team captain
- Finished his career ranked second in school history in both career 3-pointers made and attempted; he currently ranks third in both
- Scored 1,454 points in his career, ranking sixth in school history when his UW career ended; currently ranks 10th on UW's all-time scoring list
- Two-time member of the New Zealand Olympic team
- Four-time member of the New Zealand World Championship team
