1981 NCAA Champions Honored
November 16, 2001 | Men's Hockey
The 1981 UW NCAA Championship team will be honored this weekend by the W-Club and recognized at half time of the Michigan-Wisconsin football game and between the first and second periods of the Badger hockey game against Michigan Tech on Saturday night.
The 1980-81 team put together a 27-14-1 record, coming together to win Wisconsin's third national title. For head coach `Badger' Bob Johnson, it was also the third time he had guided a UW team to an NCAA title (1973 and 1977 were the previous championship teams).
The Badgers defeated heavily-favored and arch-rival Minnesota (coached by Herb Brooks), 6-3 at the Duluth (Minn.) Arena on March 28, 1981.
The UW advanced to the national title game with a 5-1 win over CCHA champion Northern Michigan in semifinal action.
Scott Lecy led the team in scoring that year (26-49=75), while Peter Johnson and John Newberry paced the team with 30 goals scored each. Marc Behrend (11-4-1) and Terry Kleisinger (11-5-0) split time in the nets.
Behrend, who was the NCAA Tournament MVP, was joined on the all-tourney team by teammates John Newberry.
Members of that team making appearances in Madison this weekend are, Jeff Andringa (Madison, Wis.), Tom Carroll (Edina, Minn.), John Johannson (Rochester, Minn.), Peter Johnson (Madison, Wis.), Ken Keryluk (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Scott Lecy (Rochester, Minn.), Todd Lecy (Rochester, Minn.), Jay McFarlane (Edmonton, Alberta), John Newberry (Victoria, British Columbia), Ted Pearson (Flin Flon, Manitoba), Kip Pendleton (Madison, Wis.), Ed Repins (Shorewood, Wisconsin), Scott Sabo (Thief River Falls, Minn.), Ron Vincent (Victoria, British Columbia) and Theran Welsh (Weldon, Saskatchewan).
