Badgers' Leavitt Earns WCHA Rookie of the Week Honors
December 10, 2001 | Men's Hockey
Freshman center Alex Leavitt (Edmonton, Alberta) was named the WCHA's Rookie of the Week for his play in Wisconsin's sweep of the North Dakota Fighting Sioux last weekend at the Kohl Center. Leavitt was credited with 2-1=3 in Friday night's come-from-behind win over UND. He tallied twice on the power play and assisted on another goal in the 7-6 overtime win. Down 6-2 in the final period, the UW mounted a four-goal comeback to send the game to overtime, where the Badgers won it at the 1:59 mark on a goal by Rene Bourque (Lac La Biche, Alberta).
On Saturday night, Leavitt added another assist, this time on the game-winning tally at the 13:43 mark of the third period on the score by sophomore Bourque.
So far this season, Leavitt is tied for sixth in league scoring among his peers with 6-6=12 through 16 games this season. The 17-year-old has 3-2=5 in the last three games for the Badgers and ranks fourth in team scoring. He is tied for the Badger lead (with senior David Hukalo) with three power-play goals.
The sweep was the first at home for the UW this season and also improved the UW to 8-7-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the WCHA with 13 points, good for sole possession of fourth place.
It is the third league `Player of the Week' honor for a Badger player this season after junior goaltender Scott Kabotoff was honored as the Defensive Player of the Week in back-to-back weeks on Nov. 12 and 19.
