Prior to her appointment with Sacramento State, Macfarlane spent August 1999 until May 2000 as an assistant coach with Wisconsin's novice openweight rowing program.
A 2000 graduate of Wisconsin, Macfarlane earned a bachelor of science degree in cartography and geographic information systems. She rowed as part of the Badger openweight program from 1995-1999 during which she earned First Team all-Central Region and the Graves Family Award given to the team most valuable player.
