After competing against Navy in a scrimmage yesterday, the Badger women's openweight team raced for the first time this season against Northeastern and Rutgers on the Raritan River, Saturday.
The Badgers won the varsity and novice four races, and finished second to Northeastern in four other competitions. The UW varsity four beat Northeastern by just over two seconds, with a time of 7:55.5 to the Huskies' 7:57.6. In the novice four, Wisconsin finished in 8:10.1, with Northeastern second in 8:22.2 and Rutgers third in 8:44.2.
In the premier race of the day, Northeastern beat Wisconsin by just over five seconds. Northeastern crossed the line in 6:51.2, while Wisconsin raced to a 6:56.3. Rutgers was third in 7:06.8. Northeastern also won the second varsity eight with a 6:58.2. Wisconsin was second in 7:08.9.
'We were really pleased with the opening results, especially with our limited water time,' said head coach Mary Browning. 'We are looking forward to seeing Northeastern again at the Eastern Sprints and racing them hard.
The Badgers return from their spring break training and next compete on April 6 when they play host to Iowa.
'The training trip we just completed was very good, ' said Browning. 'Our athletes are really tired so that, I think, contributed to some of the results on the varsity and junior varsity side. It was great early-season racing and we're pleased with our results so far. We are looking forward to going faster.'
