Badger Openweights Face No. 1 Washington, NO. 15 Washington State
April 13, 2002 | Women's Rowing
In a steady rain and strong winds, the Badger openweight varsity eight women finished third in a race on Montlake Cut against No. 1 Washington and No. 15 Washington State, Saturday.
For the 2000-meter course, Washington finished in 6:55.7, just over seven seconds faster than No. 15 Washington State. Wisconsin was third in 7:15.5.
The race between Washington and Wisconsin was the 10th time the teams have met, starting in 1993. Washington retains the 'W' trophy as it has in all previous meetings.
With all three crews nearing the halfway point of the race, a police boat, responding to a call that someone fell or jumped off the Montlake Bridge, sped past the boats and created an unexpected wake. Despite the boat-rocking waves, the three crews continued on.
The Badgers resume action on Saturday, April 20 in Iowa City, Iowa. Wisconsin is scheduled to meet Minnesota and Michigan State during the day. Following that trip, the Badgers return home for the annual Midwest Rowing Championships, Saturday, April 27 on Lake Wingra in Madison, Wis.
