Badger Openweights Battle Minnesota, No. 13 Michigan State

Wisconsin took seven of 11 races on Saturday, including morning races against Minnesota and afternoon races against Michigan State.
Against Minnesota, Wisconsin won the second varsity eight, varsity four, novice eight and novice four. The Badgers finished the second varsity eight in 7:08.4 to the Gophers' 7:16.1. The Badger win in the varsity four was by almost a 20-second margin as the UW out-dueled the U of M, 7:54.5 to 8:14.3.
Minnesota took the varsity eight and second novice eight. In the race of the teams' top boats, Minnesota edged Wisconsin's varsity eight, 7:03.88 to 7:05.30.
The Badgers beat the Spartans in the second varsity eight, novice eight, second novice eight and novice four. The Badgers second varsity eight held a four-second edge on MSU's crew, 7:19.5 to 7:23.5. Wisconsin's sweep over Michigan State in the novice events included a 12-second difference in the novice eight and a 10-second spread in the novice four.
'All around, Wisconsin did really, really well,' said head coach Mary Browning. 'We were hoping for better results in the varsity eight events, which really affects our polls and our standings, but it wasn't meant to be today.'
The Badgers return home next weekend for the 30th annual Midwest Rowing Championships. Wisconsin rows on Saturday, April 27th on Lake Wingra. Racing is slated to begin at 6:30 a.m., with the last race beginning after 6:30 p.m.
