April 30, 2002 | Women's Rowing
The Wisconsin women's openweight varsity four has been named the Big Ten Boat of the Week for its performance at the Midwest Rowing Championships this past weekend.
The varsity four earned Wisconsin's first weekly conference honor of the season after winning the varsity four competition on Lake Wingra, Saturday, during the 30th annual Midwest Rowing Championships. The UW defeated two boats from Minnesota, one from Washington (Mo.) and one from Northwestern in the finals. The Badgers rowed to a time of 7:59.70, while the second-place boat from Minnesota finished in 8:13.77.
Coxswain Ashley Strobel, Alana Burny, Nikki Lennart, Aliza Richman and Erin Conlin rowed in the boat.
The Badger openweights head to Lansing, Mich., this Saturday, May 4, for the Big Ten Championships. Wisconsin, one of two teams to ever win a race at the Big Ten Championships, is seeded first in the second novice eight race. Michigan with three first seeds, and Ohio State with two first seeds, are the only other schools with top-seeded boats.
