Women's Openweights Honored by CRCA
June 14, 2002 | Women's Rowing
Three Badger women's openweight rowers have been recognized by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association as either All-Central Region selections or as Central Region National Scholar-Athletes.
Named first-team All-Central Region was junior Marianna Waters (Shorewood, Wis.). A member of the Wisconsin varsity eight, she was the UW's lone member of the All-Big Ten First Team, as well as an Academic All-Big Ten choice. Waters helped Wisconsin to its 28th Midwest Rowing Championship title during 2002 and will be one of the team captains for the 2002'03 season.
Joining Waters on the all-region team is senior Jenny Pofahl (Middleton, Wis.). The second-team pick was also a member of the Badger varsity eight and is a three time member of the Academic All-Big Ten team. With a 3.90 grade-point average, Pofahl is also one of two Badgers to be named a 2002 CRCA Central Region National Scholar-Athlete. The honor makes her the first Badger recognized three times in a career. The molecular biology major was made a two-time Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-District pick earlier this spring.
Senior Erin Buchanan (Appleton, Wis.), with a 3.54 grade-point average in education, was the other Badger chosen a 2002 CRCA All-Central Region National Scholar-Athlete. Wisconsin's varsity eight coxswain was recently named to her first Academic All-Big Ten team.
