The Big Ten Conference office today announced University of Wisconsin swimmers Susan Johnson (Toledo, Ohio) and Eric Wiesner (Montrose, Colo.), as well as diver Amanda Witte (LaGrange, Ill.), as its Athletes of the Week.
Both Johnson and Wiesner won three events, while Witte swept both diving events, in leading the Badgers to victories over UW-Green Bay and UW-Milwaukee last week.
'Winning these awards really starts the season off on a positive note,' head coach Eric Hansen said. 'All three have put themselves in a position to be major contributors this year. Their success is a direct result of their preparation over the summer.'
Johnson, the 2004 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, earns her second career Swimmer of the Week honor after winning the 50-yard freestyle (24.05), the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.55) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:34.34).
Wiesner, a senior, was selected co-Swimmer of the Week for tallying three of the men's team's nine triumphs, with his being the 50-yard freestyle (20.94), the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.02) and the 400-yard medley relay (3:33.45).
Witte's second Diver of the Week award was given to her for taking first in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events with scores of 218.40 and 231.70, respectively.
'Amanda is setting herself up for a great year,' diving coach Josh Seykora said. 'It shows her hard work is paying off. '
The Badgers have the week off before returning to action against the Hawkeyes Oct. 22-23 in Iowa City, Iowa.
