December 10, 2004 | Men's Hockey
Ross Carlson (Duluth, Minn.) scored twice and Jake Dowell (Eau Claire, Wis.) added another goal, but Minnesota State was able to score in overtime to defeat the No. 2 Wisconsin men's hockey team 4-3 Friday night at the Midwest Wireless Civic Center.
The Badgers (12-5-0 overall, 9-4-0 WCHA) overcame a two-goal Maverick advantage in the third period and took a 3-2 lead, but Minnesota State (7-6-2, 4-6-1) found the equalizer in the third period and Maverick forward David Backes scored his second goal of the game 1:12 into overtime to give Minnesota State the victory.
After a scoreless first period, the Mavericks jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Backes recorded a power play goal at 2:57 of the second and Chad Brownlee scored at 7:17 of the second.
Carlson closed the gap to 2-1 at the 13:33 mark of the second with a power play goal from Robbie Earl (Los Angeles) and Jeff Likens (Barrington, Ill.).
Carlson struck again with his ninth goal of the season at 13:00 of the third. Earl added his second assist of the game and freshman Joe Pavelski (Plover, Wis.) also notched an assist to give both 14 assists on the season.
Dowell briefly gave the Badgers a 3-2 lead 52 seconds later. Tom Gilbert (Bloomington, Minn.) found Dowell down low on the power play to give UW its only lead of the game.
The goal along with Carlson's two tie them with Earl for the team-lead with nine.
However Adam Gerlach scored at 16:37 of the third to tie the game and send it to overtime where Backes ended UW's six-game WCHA winning streak 1:12 into the extra session.
Bernd Bruckler (Graz, Austria) made 28 saves on the night while Minnesota State goalie Jon Volp recorded 36 stops.
The Badgers finished the game 2-for-8 on the power play while the Mavericks went 1-for-6.
The game marked the sixth time in the last 11 meetings between Wisconsin and Minnesota State that the game went to overtime.
The Badgers and Mavericks conclude their series in Mankato Saturday night at 7:07 p.m.
