This Week in Badger Athletics
December 27, 2004 | General News
Wisconsin athletics will ring in the new year with the Badger Hockey Showdown at the Kohl Center on New Year's Eve and Day. The Kohl Center will also host three basketball outings this week.
Men's Basketball
' The men's basketball team (7-2) takes on Western Carolina (5-8) tonight at 7:05 p.m. The Badgers then face nationally ranked Alabama (9-1) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in a game televised by ESPN2.
' The Badgers recorded their school-record 34th consecutive home win with an 85-53 victory over UNC-Greensboro on Thursday. That is the longest current home winning streak in the country (Oklahoma State has the second-longest streak in the nation with 22 straight home wins).
' The Badgers have won four of their last six games against teams ranked in the top 25. They are 6-0 against ranked teams at home in Bo Ryan's four seasons as head coach.
Women's Basketball
' The Badgers (5-4) hope to recover quickly from a 14-day competitive layoff for finals and the holidays. UW's last game was a 104-91 win over Santa Clara on Dec. 16. The Badgers finish the 2004 portion of their schedule with a contest against No. 20/19 Purdue (6-3) on Dec. 30. The game, which will be the Big Ten Conference opener for both teams, is slated to start at 7 p.m. in the Kohl Center. UW hits the road for a Big Ten game at Northwestern (3-10) on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Men's Hockey
' Wisconsin (13-4-0, 10-4-0 WCHA) returns to action after a two-week break to play host to the 16th annual Badger Hockey Showdown.
' Wisconsin plays Yale on New Year's Eve at 7:07 p.m., following a contest between Clarkson and defending-champion Ferris State at 4:07 p.m.
' The tournament finishes on New Year's Day with Wisconsin playing at 7:07 p.m. and Yale at 4:07 p.m. The championship game will be at the time of the winner of the Yale-Wisconsin game.
' Other than Wisconsin, Ferris State will be the second team to ever defend its title. 1999 champion North Dakota returned in 2000 to defend its title, but lost in the opening round.
' Clarkson makes its first appearance in the tournament, while Ferris State makes its second and Yale competes for the third time.
' Wisconsin last won the Badger Hockey Showdown in 2002, two seasons ago.
Men's/Women's Swimming/Diving
' The men's and women's swimming and diving teams begin their annual three-week training trip in Hawaii this week.
' On Friday, they will take part in the Duke Kahanamoku Sprint Meet'also known as the Rainbow Classic'at the University of Hawaii. Last year, the Badger men won 10 of 12 events, while the women won eight.
