Badgers Head to Arizona

The Wisconsin men's and women's swimming and diving teams continue on with the 2005 season as they head out to Arizona this weekend. The men's team will compete against Arizona on Friday and Saturday while the women's team will take on Penn State in addition to the Wildcats. The meet will be held at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center in Tucson, Ariz., and will begin at 2 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.
The Wildcats handed the Badger women their only dual meet loss last season, 141-119. Current senior Anna Trinidad won the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.93) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:20.57) to lead the women. Trinidad also placed second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.18) behind Susan Johnson's first-place time of 2:01.09.
The men's team fell 160-99 while Wildcat women's team edged out Wisconsin At the meet, then-senior Adam Mania led the men's team with a first-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (48.69), and second place finishes in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.68) and 100-yard butterfly (50:47).
The women are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Southern Methodist University Classic last weekend in Dallas, Texas. Freshman Yi Ting Siow led the Badgers with three first place finishes. On the first day of competition, Siow won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:16.34. During the second day, Siow recorded two more in the 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley. In her 200-yard breaststroke race, she broke a school record and recorded an NCAA 'A' qualifying standard with her time of 2:11.59. In the 200-yard individual medley, Siow swam a 2:01.51 for an NCAA 'B' qualifying standard.
The men will look to continue their unbeaten streak this weekend. The last time the Badgers raced, they defeated Iowa and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 162-80 and 201-42, respectively at the Natatorium on Oct. 13. Junior Tom Molzahn recorded two wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.50) and 500-yard freestyle (4:34.89) to lead the team.
The Badgers also finished first in both the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay. Molzhan joined the freestyle relay along with freshmen Mike Desautels, Kyle Sorensen and Scott Rice to record a time of 3:07.35. Rice, Sorenson and freshmen Mike Hopkins and Eric Johnson swam a 3:28.29 in the medley relay.
The Badger men also won their first meet of the season, 140-95 against UW-Green Bay at the Natatorium on Oct. 7.
This will be the first meet for both of Arizona's teams while the Penn State women's team is coming off a win over West Virginia (148-93) on Oct. 13.
After the trip to Arizona, the Wisconsin men's and women 's teams will head to Bloomington, Ind., Nov. 4 to compete against Indiana, Southern Illinois and Louisville. The meet is scheduled for 1 p.m.
