December 21, 2005 | Women's Hockey
Former Wisconsin women's hockey standout and two-year captain Carla MacLeod was named to the official Canadian 2006 Olympic roster as announced by Hockey Canada and the team's head coach Melody Davidson, Wednesday.
Hailing from Calgary, Alberta, MacLeod has participated in Hockey Canada development teams from a young age. Before completing her eligibility at Wisconsin, MacLeod skated with the Canadian women's national team at select international events including the Four Nations Cup and World Championship. Since completing her eligibility in May 2005, MacLeod has been training full-time with Canada's national women's team.
As a Badger, MacLeod anchored a stingy defense and garnered numerous conference and national accolades. A second team All-America selection she became the third Badger to be a two-time All-American. In her final season, she ranked ninth among the nation's defenders in points per game and was selected as the USCHO National Defensive Player of the Year as well as to all-USCHO first team. MacLeod was named to the All-WCHA second team and the WCHA all-tournament team. She was also a top-10 finalist for Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award. She graduated with the highest career plus/minus rating in UW history (+84).
Canada's 21-player women's hockey roster consists of 12 forwards, six defense and three goalies. The official Olympic roster will be 20 players (Canada will bring one extra goalie to Turin in case of injury). The coaching staff also named defenseman Delaney Collins as an alternate, who will train with the team up until they depart for Torino. Canada began the season in August with 27 players centralized full time in Calgary, Alberta.
'The selection process has been very difficult for our coaching staff which speaks volumes about the talent and depth we have in this country for elite level female players,' said Davidson. 'We are extremely excited to send such a quality group of people to represent Canada at the Olympics and we will now focus on our last month of preparation.'
The team will be playing a number of games over the next month and will continue to train in Calgary leading to their departure on Jan. 29 for the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Torino, Italy.
Canada's next series is against Team USA. Canada will play against the USA in St. Paul, MN at the Xcel Energy Centre on Dec. 30 and in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the MTS Centre on Jan. 1. MacLeod will face former teammate and current Team USA member, Molly Engstrom (Siren, Wis.) in the game.
Canada will open the 2006 Olympic Winter Games against Italy on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 3:30 Central.
