Alvarez Announces Staff Adjustments
December 22, 2005 | General News
University of Wisconsin Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez announced plans Thursday to realign his senior administrative staff effective Feb. 1, 2006. The announcement included the assignment of new duties to some current senior staff personnel as well as the promotion of Marija Neubauer to the new position of Associate Athletic Director for Development.
'I'm pleased to be working with such a talented group of professionals as I begin my full-time athletic director duties at the conclusion of this football season,' Alvarez said. 'I believe these adjustments will allow us to take full advantage of the skills and experience of my senior staff. '
The new plan incorporates some of the temporary adjustments Alvarez made in recent months to address the departures of senior staff members Cheryl Bailey, Jamie Pollard and Steve Malchow.
Under the new alignment plan:
Doug Beard, formerly Associate Athletic Director, will assume the new title of Senior Associate Athletic Director and continue to oversee the day-to-day administrative operations of the department as chief of staff, a role he assumed following Pollard's departure in September. In addition, Beard will oversee the business office, human resources, sports medicine, event management, food and beverage and men 's and women's hockey.
Senior Associate Athletic Director Vince Sweeney will assume new duties in the communications area, including oversight of athletics communications, Web site services and technical services. Sweeney also will continue to oversee marketing and promotions, the ticket office and serve as liaison with Badger Sports Properties and the National W Club. In addition, Sweeney will continue supervisory duties with the men 's and women's basketball programs.
Associate Athletic Director John Chadima will now serve as sport administrator for football as well as oversee facilities and maintenance, capital projects, strength and conditioning, equipment room, University Ridge golf course, men's and women's golf and men's and women's crew.
Associate Athletic Director David Harris, who currently oversees the academic services areas, will continue his oversight of the compliance office, a role he assumed temporarily last September.
Associate Athletic Director Terry Gawlik will continue as the department's Senior Woman Administrator and will supervise men's and women's swimming, men's and women's cross country and track, men's and women 's soccer, softball, volleyball and wrestling.
Neubauer, who previously served as Assistant Athletic Director for Development, will assume oversight for the department's fundraising and development activities, including the Badger Fund. She also will supervise men's and women's tennis and the spirit squad. Neubauer is a former All-American tennis player at Wisconsin who worked previously at the Big Ten Conference and the UW Foundation prior to joining the UW Athletic Department in 2000.
'We're thrilled to elevate Marija to a key management position in the department,' Alvarez said. 'She has done an outstanding job in growing our annual fundraising and will be a tremendous asset to us as we continue to expand those efforts in the months and years ahead.'
Alvarez also announced that Director of Athletic Communications Justin Doherty will assume additional responsibilities in the area of communications and that Assistant Athletic Director John Jentz, the current director of finance for the department, would assume additional duties with the oversight of video services and in bowl and other post-season planning for the department.
Alvarez said he would conduct a national search for an additional Associate Athletic Director to fill the remaining vacancy on the senior staff, a position that will be filled at a later date.
