A school record five Wisconsin women's openweight rowers have been named to the 2005 Collegiate Rowing Coaches Assocation (CRCA) All-Region Team, the organization announced on Friday. Seniors Nikki Lennart and Shannon Gedman, and junior coxswain Meghan Bradshaw were selected to the first team, while seniors Jenny Tuffree and Julie Quoss were picked to the second team. Wisconsin's five selections led all teams in the NCAA Central Region and shared tops in the nation.
Varsity eight boats ranked in the top six regionally received automatic selections for their respective nominees.
Lennart, a 2005 First-team All-Big Ten pick and 2004 CRCA Second-team All-Region selection, rows seven seat for the UW's 11th-ranked varsity eight. The Milwaukee, Wis., native is one of two repeat selections for the UW this year.
Gedman, 2005 team captain, was a 2005 Second-team All-Big Ten choice. Two seat for the UW's varsity eight, Gedman is the younger sister of former UW rower Tara Gedman and hails from Waukesha, Wis.
Bradshaw is the second UW coxswain ever recognized as an all-region selection joining 2001 pick Tiffany Suda. The leader for Wisconsin varsity eight this season, she is a Davidsonville, Md., native.
Tuffree, a Middleton, Wis., native, joins Bradshaw as a first-time honoree in the sport of rowing. She rows five seat in the UW varsity eight that placed second among Central Region teams at the 2005 NCAA Central-South Regional last weekend.
The last member of the squad is Quoss, a first-team pick last year. A second-teamer this time around, the two-time Academic All-Big Ten team member hails from Naperville, Ill. She rows as the four seat in the UW varsity eight.
Wisconsin will next compete at the 2005 NCAA Division I Rowing Championships in Rancho Cordova, Calif., May 27-29. The Badgers were selected to the 12-team field for the second-straight year. Wisconsin placed 11th overall at the 2004 NCAA Rowing Championships.
