December 05, 2006 | Women's Hockey
Wisconsin women's hockey players Sara Bauer and Meaghan Mikkelson have been named the WCHA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for the week of Dec. 4, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced on Tuesday. The awards are the first of the season for both seniors.
Bauer, a native of St. Catharines, Ontario, broke the University of Wisconsin career point record and moved into eighth place in NCAA history with a six-point weekend at Robert Morris on Dec. 1-2.
Bauer tied the school record with two goals and two assists last Friday, then scored late in the first period last Saturday to record her 178th career point, breaking the UW career point record that had belonged to Meghan Hunter. Bauer went on to add another assist to push her career total to 179 points (66 goals and 113 assists) in 128 career games.
She has 10 goals and 23 assists this season, making her the only player in the nation with over 30 points or over 20 assists.
The weekly league offensive award is the fifth of Bauer's career and her first since Jan. 24, 2006. She was also named the league rookie of the week twice during the 2003-04 season.
Mikkelson recorded the best weekend of her collegiate career with one goal, five assists and six points in the University of Wisconsin's two-game, 10-0, 5-0, non-conference sweep of Robert Morris on Dec. 1-2.
Mikkelson scored the opening goal last Friday early in the first period and that goal held up to be the game-winner. Four of Mikkelson's five goals this season have been game-winners, tying her for the national lead in that category. She added assists on Wisconsin's second and seventh goals in the UW victory.
Last Saturday, the St. Albert, Alberta native recorded primary assists on Wisconsin 's first three goals to help the Badgers complete the weekend sweep.
Mikkelson leads all Division I defensemen in points (22) and assists (17). On the other end of the ice, Mikkelson has helped the Badgers post three consecutive shutouts while limiting teams to just 10.3 shots per game during that stretch.
The weekly defensive award is the first of Mikkelson's career, however she was named the WCHA Rookie of the Week on Oct. 13, 2003.
Bauer, Mikkelson and the Badgers return to the ice when they face St. Cloud State Dec. 8-9 at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
