
McDonagh, Goloubef debut at WJC with wins

The 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship got off to a stellar beginning for two Wisconsin Badgers as sophomore defensemen Ryan McDonagh (USA) and Cody Goloubef (Canada) helped their respective countries to victories on the first day of the tournament on Friday. The event takes place Dec. 26-Jan. 5 in Ottawa, Ontario.
McDonagh and Team USA skated to an 8-2 victory over Germany on Friday afternoon. McDonagh chipped in an assist on the Americans' fifth goal of the contest. He was also called for a tripping penalty in the second period.
Goloubef and Team Canada also cruised to an 8-1 victory over Czech Republic on Friday evening. Goloubef went pointless, but collected a penalty in the third period.
Both McDonagh and Goloubef will return to action on Sunday as the Americans face Czech Republic at 6:30 p.m., CT on NHL Network, while Team Canada's game against Kazahkstan can be seen on NHL Network at 2:30 p.m., CT.
