December 29, 2008 | General News
The men's basketball team opens Big Ten play, the women play three games, while both men's and women's hockey are in action at the Kohl Center and the wrestling team competes at the Midlands Championships.
The Badger men's basketball team opens conference play Wednesday at Michigan. The game is a rematch of last season's Big Ten opener when the Badgers won at Michigan, 70-54. The Badgers then return home to host Penn State on Saturday with tip set for 1 p.m. UW is coming off a 69-74 loss to Texas in its most recent game, but owns a 43-12 (.782) record in games following a loss under Ryan. UW has won 20-straight games against non-ranked opponents.
The UW women's basketball team has a busy week ahead with three games, two of which are on the road. The Badgers look to even the score in the fifth-annual Border Battle when Minnesota comes to town for the lone meeting of the season Monday night. The winner will take home 40 points towards the annual Border Battle between Wisconsin and Minnesota. The Badgers then continue conference action with a New Years Day match-up against Illinois, followed by a game at Northwestern on Sunday.
The men's hockey team (10-7-3, 7-5-2 WCHA), fresh off its 10th Badger Hockey Showdown title, wraps up non-conference play and an eight-game homestand with two games against Northern Michigan (3-12-3, 2-9-3-2 CCHA) on Friday-Saturday. Wisconsin is riding a seven-game unbeaten streak (6-0-1), the program's longest since going 14 games unbeaten (12-0-2) from Oct. 21-Dec. 3, 2005. UW is 5-0-1 on the current homestand and is in the midst of an eight-game home unbeaten streak.
The tenth-ranked Wisconsin wrestling team (5-1-0 overall) returns to action at the 46th annual Midlands Championships Monday-Tuesday in Evanston, Ill. Over 30 teams will compete with 13 of those teams being ranked in the top-25 or receiving votes in the latest InterMat poll. Competition began at 9:30 a.m. Monday and continues all day Monday and resumes at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The Big Ten Network will broadcast the finals live on Tuesday beginning at 7 p.m.
The unbeaten women's hockey team returns from a three week holiday break to host the U.S. Select Team in an exhibition match. The Badgers (18-0-2) will use the exhibition match as a tune-up for their upcoming series at Minnesota Duluth. Team USA is made up of 16 post-NCAA players based in Blaine, Minn. The team plays in an elite men 's league and against high school boys' teams, the Minnesota Whitecaps (WWHL) and NCAA Div. I women's teams. Joining the U.S. for the weekend are former Badgers Phoebe Turner and Mikka Nordby.
