MADISON, Wis. -- Caitlin Comfort’s pace was no match for the field Friday at the Bradley Classic in Peoria, Ill. The sophomore won the 6-kilometer race by a full 20 seconds, leading Wisconsin to its first team win of the season.
“Things are coming along for us,” head coach Jim Stintzi said. “We definitely ran better during this meet than we have earlier in the year.”
Out of the 19 teams that competed, UW placed first with 78 points followed by Bradley University at second with 97 points and Southern Illinois earning third with 119 points. Indiana State came in fourth with Northwestern University following in fifth place.
Comfort cruised to the victory in a time of 21:10, but she wasn’t the only member of the Badger squad to raise her performance. She was followed by junior Karen Greuel who placed 11th overall in 22:05.
Freshman Kiah Erhke really stepped up for the Badgers, placing third for UW and 14th overall in 22:09. This is Erhke’s first time placing in the top three for Wisconsin.
Junior Karlye Wolff’s time of 22:28 earned her fourth for UW and 21st in the meet. Teammate Megan Beers came in next, placing fifth for Wisconsin and 29th overall. Freshman Cassidi Running crossed the finish line 12 seconds later, earning 34th in the meet.
Rounding out the Badger squad was junior Alexa Renstrom in 41st place with a time of 23:01.
“We’re getting better each week so this was a big positive step for us,” Stintzi said. “We have to keep working hard to reach our goals for the rest of the season.”
Up next, the Badgers return home to compete in the inaugural Badger Ridge Run at the new Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course on Oct. 24.
