MADISON, Wis. -- Saturday's theme for the men's track and field team was all about winning. The Wisconsin men's track and field team won eight events as it hosted the Twilight Invitational on Saturday at the McClimon Complex.
The meet served as a final tune-up for next weekend, when UW competes in the Big Ten Conference Championships.
Both on the track and in the field events, the Badgers flexed their muscles as they made final preparations for next weekend's conference meet. Sophomores Adum Gross won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.29, followed by Temi Ogunbodede in 14.97. Sophomore Grant Bughman claimed victory in the 400-meter hurdles, breaking the tape in 54.24.
Jack Bolas ended his final meet at home with a victory in the 800 meters. The senior clocked a personal-best time of 1:50.38 to claim the event title. Also in the 800 meters, freshmen Patrick Moakley and Tim Hucke finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Moakley crossed the line in a time of 1:53.96, a personal-best. Hucke finished in 1:54.61.
Making his collegiate debut in the steeplechase, freshman Alex Brill won the event in a time of 9:07.78.
Freshman Gavin Robertson finished runner-up in the 200 meters with a personal-best time of 21.34. Sophomore Kyle Jefferson finished right behind Robertson, grabbing third place after clocking a time of 21.58. Also competing in the event, sophomore Andrew Milenkovski was 10th, crossing the line in 22.67.
In the 1,500, Danny Buechel competed unattached and placed second in a personal-best time of 3:54.15. Sophomore Phil Thomas was right behind Buechel, finishing third and clocking a time of 3:57.63, also a personal-best performance.
Barry Gill was Wisconsin's lone representative in the 400 meters. The senior finished third after clocking a time of 50.14.
Competing unattached, freshman Japeth Cato finished eighth in the 100 meters, crossing the line in 11.28. Cato participated in the long jump as well, recording a leap of 23 feet, 3 1/4 inches to take second place. Also competing in the long jump, sophomore Josh Flax finished third with a mark of 23-1 1/4. Seniors Victor Dupuy and Seth Pelock finished seventh and eighth in the event, respectively. Dupuy had a jump of 21-10 3/4, while Pelock had a leap of 21-6 1/4.
In the javelin, senior Rob Dehn won with a throw of 212-5. Sophomore Derek Steinbach was third with a throw of 175-3. Fellow sophomore David Grzesiak was eighth after recording a mark of 147-2. Freshman Casey Dehn recorded a victory in the shot put after throwing a personal-best distance of 55-5. Junior Jake Fritz was second with a throw of 53-5 3/4. Senior Rory Linder was seventh with a throw of 44-1 1/4. Pelock placed 11th with a mark of 41-9 3/4, while sophomore Ian Jansen was 19th after a throw of 36-0 1/4.
In other field events, Linder was runner-up in the hammer throw with a personal-best toss of 171-10. Linder finished second in the invitational portion of the hammer throw as well, notching a throw of 168-4. In the invitational section of the discus, he won after notching a throw of 166-4.
Linder was not done, however. He finished third in the discus with a throw of 160-6. The other Badger in the discus was Steinbach, who notched a toss of 136-10 to wrap up sixth place.
Mickey DeFilippo competed unattached for Wisconsin in the pole vault. The junior won the event with a clearance of 16-2 1/2. Sophomore Wes Kavelaris was runner-up after clearing a height of 15-8 1/2. Cato competed unattached and finished third, also vaulting at a height of 15-8 1/2. Jansen was fourth with a personal-best clearance of 15-2 3/4, while Pelock was sixth with a vault of 13-3.
Freshman Paul Annear won the triple jump with a leap of 46-11 1/2. Junior Pat Nichols placed second in the high jump with a clearance of 6-8. Freshman Collin Taylor was right behind Nichols, placing third and clearing a height of 6-6 3/4. Grzesiak tied for fourth in the event and recorded a jump of 6-4 3/4. Freshman Lukey Klitz was sixth after a clearance of 6-2 3/4.
Wisconsin will head to Bloomington, Ind., to compete in the Big Ten Championships May 14-16. Big Ten Network is scheduled to air coverage of the meet.
