
Beckwith's win leads way for Badgers at sectional

MADISON, Wis. -- Members of the Wisconsin swimming and diving team took to the pool in Minneapolis Wednesday night to compete in the USA Swimming Central Zone Speedo Champions Series meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The events took place in a long-course pool, as compared to the short-course setup featured during the collegiate season.
Sophomore Danielle Beckwith had the best showing of the night, claiming first place in the women’s 800-meter freestyle with a time of 8:51.32. Beckwith turned in a dominant performance in the finals, besting the runner-up by over eight seconds.
In the first event of the night, freshman Ruby Martin took second place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 57.36.
Sophomore Ashley Wanland and freshman Paulina Gralow each captured top-four finishes in the 200 breaststroke.
Wanland swam to a second-place finish in a time of 2:30.80, while Gralow took fourth with a time of 2:38.36.
On the men’s side, three Badgers had finishes of eighth or better.
Freshman Sam Rowan swam to a third-place finish in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall at 2:20.92.
Fellow freshman Marcus Guttmann earned eighth place in the 200 butterfly, finishing with a time of 2:10.41.
In the 100 freestyle, sophomore Wes Lagerhausen finished in eighth place with a time of 52.77.
The USA Swimming-sanctioned sectional meet runs through Saturday, July 24.
