INDIANAPOLIS -- Thanks to all six boats finishing within the top three, the Wisconsin women's rowing team earned a third-place finish at the Big Ten championships Sunday at Indianapolis' Eagle Creek Park.

The Badgers finished with 122 points, 25 behind Big Ten champion Michigan and 23 behind runner-up Ohio State. Michigan State finished fourth with 80 points, followed by Minnesota, Indiana and Iowa. Wisconsin, Michigan and Ohio State claimed top-three finishes in all six races.

"Today's racing unfolded exactly as we expected it to," said head coach Bebe Bryans. "It was incredibly good competition. We brought it to the best of our capabilities and were beat by two teams better than we were. That's what competition is all about, and I couldn't be prouder of our team today."

 Fast Facts
• Wisconsin finishes 3rd with 122 points
• Badgers' second novice eight wins Big Ten championship race
• UW finished in the top three in all six races

In the varsity eight race, Wisconsin's top boat finished third after a slow start that had them close to fifth with 750 meters to go. The Badgers started their sprint early and caught Michigan State with 500 meters left to finish, clocking in at 6:33.939. Michigan won in 6:24.350, followed by Ohio State.

In the second varsity eight race, Wisconsin held off Minnesota by 1.3 seconds to finish third in 6:37.349. Michigan came in first in 6:26.826, followed by Ohio State nearly six seconds back.

The first varsity four was a closely-contested race for second place, as four teams finished within six seconds. The Badgers claimed second place in 7:14.185, just two seconds ahead of Michigan and nearly 13 seconds behind Ohio State. Wisconsin was in second place for the majority of the race and held back a Wolverine rally in the final stretch.

In the second varsity four, Wisconsin held off Minnesota in the final 200 meters to finish third in 7:27.082, over two seconds ahead of the Golden Gophers and nearly five seconds behind second-place Michigan. Ohio State claimed the victory after coming out ahead of a tight race in the first 500 meters. Michigan pulled away from the Badgers in the final 250.

The first novice eight saw Ohio State pull away early, but the Badgers recovered from a slow start to finish 2nd in 6:46.278. The slow start didn't seem to faze the first-year rowers, who quickly caught and passed the other crews.

In the first race of the day, the second novice eights provided the Badgers with their only victory, winning in 6:45.559. Wisconsin had nearly a boat-length lead over Ohio State, whose closing sprint wasn't enough to catch UW.

"The second novice eight really started the day off great for us," Bryans said. "They had a great piece, they showed the depth of our team, they raced wonderfully and it was really fun to watch them go."

Individual honors were awarded after the championship races. Vanessa Kleiss was named first team All-Big Ten, while Kate Mansfield and Amy Slesar earned second-team recognition. Jane Roberts was Wisconsin's Sportsmanship Award winner.

"It could have gone to anyone in our boat, so it's a huge honor that I was selected," Kleiss said.

The Badgers hope to earn a bid to the NCAA championship race, which will be announced Tuesday.

"We'll have to wait and see if we get an NCAA selection," Bryans said. "Based on our performance today, and the strength of the Big Ten, we hope the committee will give us a bid."
