MADISON, Wis. -- Following a five-point weekend, highlighted by her first career hat trick, Wisconsin women’s hockey freshman Annie Pankowski has been named the WCHA Rookie of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
It marks the second time this year Pankowski has earned the award, and the fourth time this season a UW freshman has received the honor.
Pankowski recorded her first career hat trick in the Badgers’ 8-2 win over Minnesota State, as the Laguna Hills, California, native tickled the twine once in the second period and twice in the third. Her goal at the 7:51 mark in the second period was also the game-winner for the Badgers. In Friday’s 8-0 shutout, Pankowski added an assist before scoring the Badgers’ final goal of the afternoon late in the third period.
Pankowski finished the weekend with four goals and one assist, and was +5 during the series with the Mavericks.
On the season, Pankowski has six goals and 12 assists, and her 18 points are the most by a freshman in the NCAA. Her 1.38 points per game average ranks second nationally among freshmen and also leads the league’s rookie skaters.
Pankowski and the Badgers begin a four-game road swing this weekend with a trip to St. Cloud State. Faceoff on Friday and Saturday is set for 3 p.m.
