MADISON, Wis. -- Former Wisconsin men's hockey forward Brendan Woods became the 78th Badger in school history to play in the NHL after he made his debut on Wednesday with the Carolina Hurricanes.
It was a successful debut for Woods, who wore jersey No. 56 for Carolina. The team skated to a 2-1 shootout victory at the New Jersey Devils.
Originally drafted in the fifth round (129th overall) by Carolina during 2012 NHL Draft, Woods departed Wisconsin after his sophomore season in 2013 after 75 games as a Badger. He recorded 10 goals and 22 points in his career.
Woods had been skating for the AHL's Charlotte Checkers, where he was tied for fourth on the team with 13 points in six goals and seven assists. He had five goals and eight points in 42 games for Charlotte last season.
