UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Trailing by only a goal at halftime, the Wisconsin women's soccer team was done in by a three-goal outburst in the second half that sparked No. 4 Penn State to a 4-0 win over the Badgers in University Park, Pennsylvania, on Thursday night.
Rose Lavelle tallied a game-high five shots, including two on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net like the rest of the Badgers (3-4-2, 0-1-0 Big Ten), who fell in their Big Ten opener on the road.
Wisconsin held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks for the game, but was unable to capitalize.
The Nittany Lions (6-1-1, 1-0-0 Big Ten) got on the board first in the 28th minute on the foot of Mallory Weber. Off a centering assist from Ellie Jean, Mallory Weber was able to beat UW goalkeeper
Caitlyn Clem with a shot upper left corner for the 1-0 lead.
Penn State extended its lead in the 59th minute as Charlotte Williams played a great ball into the box for Megan Schafer, who did not waste the opportunity and scored to make it 2-0 PSU.
The final score not as indicative of the game, things broke open late with two goals for PSU the final 16 minutes.
Marissa Sheva scored off an assist from Raquel Rodriguez in the 75th minute to make it 3-0 PSU.
Frannie Crouse capped the Nittany Lion scoring with a header in the 81st minute. Williams set up the goal with a cross, which marked her second assist of the night.
Solid in net for Penn State was senior goalkeeper Britt Eckerstrom, who denied the Badgers with five saves to preserve the shutout.
Clem finished with four saves for UW, but was pressured throughout the night by 13 shots from the Nittany Lions.
Wisconsin remains on the road and travels to face No. 20 Ohio State on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT in Columbus, Ohio.
