MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's soccer team rode an offensive explosion in the first half, then closed the door on Indiana in the second half for a 3-0 home shutout at the McClimon Soccer Complex on Friday night.
Entering the game having scored just one goal in their last five games, the Badgers (4-4-3, 1-1-1 Big Ten) exploded with three goals in the first half alone against the Hoosiers. Senior midfielder
McKenna Meuer led the way, scoring a goal and adding an assist in the win.
Fellow senior midfielder
Kinley McNicoll drew blood first in the 16th minute, scoring her first goal of the year on a long-range bomb that dropped in over the head of Indiana goalkeeper Sarah Stone.
After assisting McNicoll's goal, Meuer joined in on the fun just minutes later and tapped in a header off a free kick by
Kylie Schwarz, putting UW up 2-0 in the 20th minute. The first career assist for Schwarz, it set up Meuer's team-leading fourth goal of the year.
"She was the heart and soul of our midfield today," UW head coach
Paula Wilkins said of Meuer. "I thought both defensively and offensively we were able to switch the ball through her. She was very composed on the ball and controlled the tempo of the game. I don't think we missed a beat with McKenna."
Hungry for more, Wisconsin kept pressure on the ball relentlessly and outshot Indiana 13-3 in the first half. Their dominant possession paid off, especially for freshman forward
Steph Fabry, who scored her first career goal just seconds before halftime with an assist from fellow freshman
Victoria Pickett to make it 3-0 by the break.
"As a coach, it feels great," Wilkins said of scoring multiple goals. "When a bunch of different people score, it's even better. Some of these players stepped up because of the absence of Rose (Lavelle).
Victoria Pickett did a great job in the midfield today. She's a huge reason why we were successful."
While they didn't find the back of the net in the second half, the Badgers continued to create plenty of chances. UW tallied eight shots in the second frame while limiting the Hoosiers (3-4-4, 0-1-2) to four.
The first home shutout of the season for UW, it also marked the third career clean sheet for sophomore goalkeeper
Caitlyn Clem (4-4-3).
With sights set on another Big Ten win, Wisconsin continues a three-game homestand hosting Purdue on Sunday at 3 p.m. CT.
