Wagner named a Big Ten Star of the Week
December 08, 2015 | Men's Hockey
Sophomore forward led all Big Ten skaters with five points over the weekend
MADISON, Wis. – Last season, Ryan Wagner (Park Ridge, Illinois) scored two goals and five points in his first year at Wisconsin. Last weekend, the sophomore forward scored two goals and five points in two games alone.
That offensive outburst, the best in the Big Ten last weekend, earned Wagner Big Ten Third Star of the Week honors on Tuesday. The award is the first weekly award of his career.
Last Friday, Wisconsin fell 6-4 at No. 12 Michigan, but Wagner was the primary set-up man on the Badgers second and third goals in the game. Then Saturday, Wagner single-handedly erased a two-goal deficit with a pair of power-play tallies to make it a 2-2 contest. He later added an assist that gave the Badgers a 4-3 lead. Wagner also led the Badgers with six shots on goal and was the only plus player (plus-1) for the squad. The teams would skate to a 6-6 tie, with Michigan taking home an extra point with a shootout victory.
Wagner now shares the team lead with five goals and is tied for second on the squad with 11 points in 14 contests. He also leads the team with four power-play tallies.
Wagner and the Badgers return to the state of Michigan this weekend for a Friday-Saturday series against Michigan State. The teams meet Friday at 6 p.m. CT and Saturday at 1:30 p.m. as Wisconsin closes out 2015.
