MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 21 Wisconsin women's track team closed out the regular season at home in style on Friday.
The Wisconsin Twilight, which serves as the team's final meet before the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, is often a chance for athletes to gain confidence and momentum heading into championship week.
The Badgers certainly did not let this opportunity go to waste.
UW claimed nine victories, including a sweep in all four throwing events in which two Wisconsin records were broken.
Two weeks after
Kelsey Card broke her own Big Ten and school record in the shot put at the Triton Invitational in San Diego, she did it again on her own turf.
The redshirt senior recorded an incredible mark of 60 feet, 10 3/4 inches to win the event. That throw ranks 10th in NCAA history and 10th in the world this year.
"Last time throwing here in a Badger uniform, I wanted to try to go out on a high note," Card said. "Going over 60 feet) it was huge."
The mark inches her closer to taking over Mississippi's Raven Saunders (61-6 ¼) as the nation's leader in the event.
The Plainview, Illinois, native won the event with a toss of 202-5, which came close to her Big Ten and school-record mark of 203-9 which was also thrown in San Diego. It also marked a McClimon Track record.
It was quite the senior send-off for Card who was able to celebrate her decorated collegiate career with her friends and family at her last home meet.
"It's bittersweet," Card said. "The season isn't over yet, which is good because it's not the end, but it's kind of nice to look back on all the years here, I mean five years flew by. It's good. Mom and dad are here, and gramps, so it's good to have family here and to celebrate together."
The other Wisconsin throwing record came down during the hammer throw where
Haley Showalter shattered the program-best mark on her first attempt.
The true freshman recorded a distance of 207-3 which broke the previous record set by Taylor Smith in 2013 by over 14 feet.
"Haley was unbelievable with that huge throw," Wisconsin Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Mick Byrne said. "She's now number two junior U.S. thrower of all time in that event."
The mark now ranks Showalter third in the Big Ten, first amongst freshmen in the nation, and 13th overall.
Overall, Wisconsin throwers thrived with redshirt freshman
Kennedy Blahnik taking second in the discus to Card with a toss of 168-3.
In the shot put, Blahnik and
Banke Oginni both received personal bests to take second and fourth, respectively, with marks of 50-9 1/2 and 50-4 1/2.
The wins kept coming for UW in the field events with junior
Georgia Ellenwood winning the high jump with a leap of 5-10 3/4, which matches her personal record.
The Cardinal and White also dominated the javelin throw claiming the top four spots.
Redshirt senior
Brianna Bower dominated the field with a distance of 156-5 while Ellenwood took second with a personal-best toss of 139-2.
Redshirt sophomore
Frankie Morris placed third with a new personal-record toss of 138-8 and sophomore
Danielle Weber ended up in fourth place with a mark of 136-5.
In the long jump, redshirt sophomore
Casie Pawlik won the event with a leap of 18-7.
Also contributing strong performances in the field events, sophomore
Taylor Amann took second in the pole vault with a clearance of 13-4 1/2 and freshman
Emma Haugen recorded a new personal-best height of 5-9 1/4 in the high jump.
The track also saw some top performances from the Badgers.
Junior
Brenna Detra won the 400-meter hurdles crown with a time of 1:02.98.
Sophomore
Elizabeth Flatley and redshirt freshman
Lianna Mack went 1-2 in the steeplechase with Flatley crossing the line in 11 minutes, 0.98 seconds and Mack clocking in at 11:16.31.
Jackie Dubnicka also picked up a win in the 1500 meters checking in at 4:44.51.
Additionally
Ebony McClendon, competing unattached, ran away with the win in the 100 meters recording a time of 11.81.
Overall, Byrne was happy with the performances he saw today with the Big Ten meet looming in the horizon.
"Preparing for next week, for Big Tens, we challenged kids to get on the bus," Byrne said. "The weather was great out here. There's no reason why we can't have some good performances. We got some great performances all around."
The Badgers travel to Lincoln, Nebraska for the 2016 Big Ten Outdoor Championships with action starting on Friday, May 13 at 12 p.m. CT.
