Badgers and Bulldogs battle to scoreless draw

Wisconsin outshoots Drake in double overtime tie

MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team battled Drake to a 0-0 draw through double overtime on Sunday afternoon at the McClimon Soccer Complex.

"The biggest thing is we need to find a way to win," head coach Paula Wilkins said. "If we get this many shots and that many opportunities and corner kicks, we need to find a way to do that and we need to find out who the answer for that is going to be."

In the ninth minute of the first overtime period, Wisconsin had a chance to take the game when a penalty on Drake's Hannah Wilder put senior midfielder Rose Lavelle up to take the penalty kick. But the kick hit the right goal post, narrowly missing the net, and the game was forced into a second overtime period.

In the two teams' first-ever meeting, the Badgers' offensive prowess was in full swing during the first half as they recorded nine shots, six of which came within a span of less than nine minutes.

During that time period, Lavelle made two shots on goal while junior midfielder Alexis Tye recorded one.

Despite the good looks Wisconsin had, neither team was able to net a goal by the end of regulation in the first half and headed into halftime with the game tied 0-0.

In the second half, the Cardinal and White's offense kept gaining momentum recording 11 shots, two of which were on goal. The team's defensive front was also productive, only allowing the Bulldogs to get off two shots in each period of regulation.

However, the Bulldogs' goalkeeper Haley Morris was there every time the ball came near the net, and the game was forced to go into overtime knotted at 0-0.

The final 10 minutes of play saw both teams playing their best defense as senior midfielder Micaela Powers was the only player from either team to get off a shot, but ultimately the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

The Badgers overwhelmingly won the statistical battle earning more shots (24-4), shots on goal (6-1) and corner kicks (15-1).

"I think we played pretty good, defensively," freshman forward Dani Rhodes said. "We were constantly on offense, I think that helped, We didn't really let them cross the half field. We maintained it in our attacking half. We knocked it around the back and were able to go forward. They didn't really have many chances."

Lavelle was a dominant force on the pitch recording eight shots, tying her career best and also earning a new season-high three shots on goal.

The Badger defense did their job as junior goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem was only tested once and tallied one save as the offense forced Drake's Morris to make five.

The team returns to action next weekend as they travel to California to play Stanford on Thursday, Sept. 1 at 9 p.m. and Santa Clara on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 2 p.m.

"It's going to be playing two completely different teams," Wilkins said. "We're playing two teams that are going to be in the Top 25, one being the number one team in the country. So I think we've got to make sure that we're more unified as a team defensively.

"I think we played two completely different teams this weekend, and we'll face two different oppositions next weekend. It's going to be interesting and a good learning experience."
