Murtha and Pickett step up with one goal apiece in 2-1 win
MADISON, Wis. – After a short road trip in which the Wisconsin women's soccer team tied one and lost one, the Badgers returned home and picked up a pivotal win over Big Ten powerhouse Purdue in incredible fashion Friday night while battling through 90-straight minutes of rain.
The Badgers (9-3-1 overall, 3-2-1 Big Ten) distributed the scoring well Friday night, with both Cameron Murtha and Victoria Pickett finding the back of the net in Wisconsin's 2-1 victory.
It appeared the game would bring a scoreless first half until midfielder Alexis Tye snuck a pass through Purdue's (9-3-1, 4-1-1) defense to Murtha, who ripped a shot past Purdue's keeper to open up scoring in the 42nd minute.
The Boilermakers evened the score in the 74th minute when Andrea Petrina took the cross from Hannah Melchoire and found the back of the net.
Purdue entered Friday's match with the highest win percentage in the Big Ten (.900) and an average of 7.8 shots on goal per game. Against Wisconsin's defense the Boilermakers only managed two shots on goal.
Murtha and Pickett answered Purdue's equalizer in the 78th after a saved header form Murtha ricocheted to Pickett who blew a shot off the bar which hit off the keeper and bounced in.
Straight from the pitch:
Head coach Paula Wilkins:
"It feels great to get a result after the last couple of games we've had and I think we performed well those games but now to get the result is a little bit more satisfying."
"It shows some character to come back after getting up a goal and then giving up a goal and coming back and winning it. You know, it just shows that these players have some resolve."
"I thought we could press them a little bit more because of the weather and what they were trying to do…the kids stuck to the game plan, I'm very happy about that."
Up Next: The Badgers will celebrate Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 8 at the McClimon Complex. UW faces Indiana at 1 p.m. CT at the McClimon Complex.
