MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's track and field team delivered some of its top performances of the year, as the Badgers won five events and conquered the Shell Shocker with 140 points in the team's final tune-up before the 2017 Big Ten Indoor Championships next weekend.
"We had some very good performances across the board," UW Director of Track & Field and Cross Country
Mick Byrne said. "When you look at the number of PR's out there today, obviously competing at home, in front of parents and the fans, I mean for a small meet like this there were a lot of people here tonight, it just shows you the respect our program has in that fan base."
In the weight throw,
Riley Budde set a new personal best twice, with the second toss coming at 72 feet,11 1/4 inches (22.23 meters) to dominate the competition. His throw ranks second in program history behind only two-time NCAA champion Michael Lihrman and it currently ranks as the best throw in the Big Ten Conference and sixth in the country.
"It feels good to finally put a good throw together," Budde said. "I think it's huge going into Big Tens knowing that I can do that."
Tim Guthrie had a career day in the pole vault. The junior won the event and broke his previous personal record with a leap of 16-5 1/2 (5.02m).
"It was definitely what I was looking for today," Guthrie said. "Next week is Big Tens, it's the meet we've all been working for all year so to get a good meet this week was a big confidence booster, especially going into a tough Big Ten field. I'm pretty excited."
Just behind Guthrie was
Rashid Coulibaly with a distance of 15-11 3/4 (4.87m) to continue his terrific freshman season.
"We build off each other. We go to practice every day and learn from each other," Guthrie said.
Junior
Corbin Ellis earned his own personal record with an outstanding run in the 400 meter dash. Ellis won the race with a time of 48.14 seconds with teammate
Kallen Bentz placing second in 50.66.
"
Corbin Ellis had a huge PR in the 400 and that's a big confidence booster going into Big Tens," Byrne said.
Lorenzo Larry won the 60 meter dash for the fourth time this season, besting the field with a time of 6.81. Freshman
Alex Teague finished second in 6.90.
Teague continued his day with another second-place finish, this time in the 200 meters with a run of 21.92. Bentz came in fifth with a time of 22.54.
Wisconsin swept the podium during the men's mile run, as junior
Carl Hirsch captured the victory with a run of 4:10.14. Behind him was
Cooper Barth, setting a personal record with a time of 4:11.64.
Ryan Clevenger finished third in 4:12.95 while senior
McKena Ramos placed fourth with a time of 4:17.75.
"We had a couple of kids who made the bus for next week, and that's important," Byrne said. "That was the big challenge coming into tonight, getting more kids on the team for next week and putting us in position to have a good meet at the Big Tens.
"So, mission accomplished, we have more kids added onto the roster for next week and some big PR's today. Hopefully that's a big confidence booster for a lot of our athletes going into Big Tens."
In the 60 meter hurdles, freshman
Zach Lorbeck placed second in 8.53.
Paul Afflitto took fourth with a time of 8.75 and
Isaac Hale came in seventh with a run of 9.14.
Budde also placed second in the shot put in addition to his record-setting day in the weight throw. He notched a distance of 59-7 (18.16m) while junior
Josh McDonald earned fourth with a mark of 57-11 (17.65m).
During the final race of the 2017 indoor season at the Shell, the Badgers won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:31.29.
The Badgers will head to Geneva, Ohio, for the 2017 Big Ten Indoor Championships next weekend, with competition slated to begin at 9 a.m. (CT) on Friday, Feb. 24 at the Spire Institute.
"Next week, it's a different ballgame. It's the Big Ten championship," Byrne said. "It has the atmosphere, it has the name and now we just have to go down and compete. That's what next week is about.
"Performances don't matter, times, distances, heights; it's just trying to beat someone from the other team.
