Not lacking confidence, coach prepared Badgers to defeat rival Gophers in stadium’s dedication game
MADISON, Wis. — John R. Richards had already enjoyed an accomplished athletic career at Wisconsin and a successful first tour of duty as the Badgers' football coach before he returned to campus to once again lead his alma mater for the 1917 season. Perhaps that's why he carried so much confidence leading up to the dedication game for newly-built Camp Randall Stadium. "We are going to win this game," he said just days before UW took on rival Minnesota.
Richards' team proved him right on Nov. 3, 1917, christening its new home with a victory over the Golden Gophers. Read more about Richards in his Camp Randall 100 profile.
