The Badgers outlast Cornell in thrilling home match
MADISON, Wis. – It was a heated affair at the Nielsen Stadium on Sunday afternoon as Wisconsin (7-6, 0-1 B1G) took on Cornell (3-6). The Badgers squeaked past the Bears, 4-2, to protect their undefeated home record.
The Badgers were solid in doubles, adding to their outstanding spring resume. Seniors Chema Carranza and Josef Dodridge teamed up for the first time in a while. It was a pleasant sight, as the No. 4 doubles team in the country won easily at the one-spot, 6-3, over Lev Kazakov and Jake Hansen.
Sophomore Daniel Soyfer and junior Osgar O'Hoisin were the ones to put the first tally on the board for UW. The pair won over Joseph McAllister and David Volfson in a testy, 7-5 match.
Soyfer rolled into singles play and picked up right where he left off. The Plantation, Florida, native, protected his undefeated spring record with a come-from-behind win over Kazakov, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Freshman Robert Krill collected the second dual win of his career, taking down Joseph McAllister, 6-2, 6-4 to give the Badgers a 3-0 advantage. But Cornell fought hard and battled back into the match.
It was an incredible effort from O'Hoisin that gave the Badgers the performance they needed to take the dual. The junior notched a grueling three-set win, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3 to put the Badgers over the .500 mark on the year.
Westerman's Wing: "It's validation for the work these guys are putting in. They've been working hard all year. For whatever reasons, a few haven't gone our way – but that's tennis. Cornell is a very good team. We lost to them last year. But ultimately, I'm just proud of our guys. They played hard and it went our way today."
"We had a complete physical and mental effort from the team today. That's what it takes to beat NCAA-type teams and we had it this afternoon. That's what we demand of each other. I like our level right now and I'd like to maintain it."
Up Next: The Badgers entertain Green Bay in the second part of the doubleheader on Sunday at 4:45 p.m. at the Nielsen.
