Breaking the ice ... with Mick Messner
September 11, 2018 | Men's Hockey
MADISON, Wis. – As the start of the 2018-19 Wisconsin men's hockey season nears, UWBadgers.com delves deeper into both the on and off-ice lives of each of UW's nine newest skaters, exploring topics ranging from favorite hockey memories to what each would ask for if they had one wish.
Leading off for the Badgers is forward and Madison native Mick Messner.
Growing up just minutes from the Kohl Center, Messner spent his prep years skating in rinks around Madison. Before becoming a Badger, the six-foot, 193-pound forward played three seasons with the USHL's Madison Capitols, serving as a co-captain during the 2017-18 campaign. With the Capitols, Messner tallied 29 goals and 80 points in 142 games. Prior to joining the USHL, Messner spent two seasons playing prep hockey for the Madison West Regents, a local high school just down the road from campus. He also skated in the 2016 All-American Prospects game in St. Paul, Minnesota, and the 2017 USHL/NHL Top Prospects game in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. At the international level, Messner appeared at the Hlikna Memorial Tournament with the U-18 U.S. team in 2016, scoring two goals, including one in the championship against the Czech Republic. Messner also competed at the World Junior A Challenge with the U.S. Junior Select Team in December of 2016, tallying a goal and an assist en route to a gold medal.
Messner will don the No. 12 jersey this season. Former Badgers to also wear No. 12 include Grant Besse, Keegan Meuer and Jack Skille.
