Wisconsin suffers heartbreaking loss to elite Oklahoma State squad
February 09, 2019 | Men's Tennis
MADISON, Wis. – For a gelling young squad, a match against one of college's most elite teams presents a unique opportunity for growth. And while the Badgers put their whole heart and soul into the match against Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon, they fell short in the upset, 4-2.
Team doubles has been a point of emphasis all year long for the Badgers. It showed against the Cowboys on Saturday.
Senior Osgar O'Hoisin and freshman Jared Pratt took down Oklahoma State's Max Tybar and Matei Vocel, 6-2. Sophomore Robert Krill and junior Chase Colton followed suit with their own 6-2 win over Brady Draheim and Mathieu Scaglia.
O'Hoisin picked up the solo win for the Badgers in the singles category. The senior knocked off Vocel by a retirement decision, 6-2, 3-0.
But the score can deceive, as four of six matches went to three sets, with the match deciding set going to a 6-6 tiebreaker. Long story short, it was a nail-biting, adrenaline rushing match that Oklahoma State won by a hair on its chin.
Westerman's Wing:
Head coach Danny Westerman
"We fought with every ounce of energy they had. Great crowd – best one of the year so far. It's early so hopefully we will get more of these crowds as the year progresses.
We're going to remember this one and put it in our back pocket. We're going to learn a lot from this. We learned a lot about ourselves today. We're right up there with the best in the country and that will be the takeaway."
