MADISON, Wis. — The Badgers (0-3-0, 0-2-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) fell 5-1 to the No. 10 St. Cloud State Huskies (3-0-0, 0-0-0 0-0-0 NCHC) at the Kohl Center on Friday in the season's hope opener.
After a scoreless first period during which UW held a 12-7 shot advantage, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead 3:56 into the second period. Grant Cruikshank scored from the far side after a Micah Miller wrap-around attempt sailed through the crease.
St. Cloud scored two quick goals later in the second period to take a 3-0 lead. Grant Ahcan scored shorthanded on a feed from Cruikshank in the corner, then Cooper Wylie's point shot found the net.
Junior forward Mathieu De St. Phalle put the Badgers on the board at 13:07 in the third period. Sophomore defenseman Daniel Laatch fired a shot on net that deflected up in the air and bounced in front of the net where De St. Phalle tapped it in to make the score, 3-1.
St. Cloud's Spencer Meier erased thoughts of a comeback with a power-play goal at 15:11 in the third period. Meier hammered in a rebound on a one-timer from Okabe Zach Okabe and Jami Krannila.
