Former Badgers win silver, bronze medals in Poland
POZNAM, Poland – A pair of former Wisconsin women's rowers took home medals from 2022 World Rowing Cup II that wrapped up this past weekend on Lake Maita.
Wanamaker, a 2020 U.S Olympian, teamed up with Claire Collins to take the silver medal in the women's pair. The Neenah, Wisconsin, native's crew won its heat earlier in the week, then finished just behind the winning crew from the Netherlands for the silver.
Vitas earned her medal, a bronze, in the women's double sculls. The Franklin, Wisconsin, native used the final 500 meters to edge past China and reach the medal stand. Netherlands won the gold, while Ireland took second, just under 0.5 seconds ahead of the Americans. Vitas and crewmate Kara Kohler bested China by 0.3 seconds.
Of the six events that Americans took home medals, three included Badgers with men's rower and Germantown, Wisconsin, native Michael Knippen also winning bronze in the men's four.
With their finishes at this event, coupled with wins in their respective events earlier this year at USRowing's National Selection Regattas, both Wanamaker and Vitas are in position to compete at the 2022 World Championships if they accept those spots by the end of the month.
