Wisconsin thwarts Iowa's undefeated season
IOWA CITY, Iowa- The Wisconsin women's soccer team went on a business trip to Iowa to face the No. 9 Hawkeyes. The Badgers earned the 2-1 upset with two goals in three minutes.
How it Happened
First Half
Iowa struck first off a penalty kick in the 19th minute.
After the goal, the Badgers picked up the pace and began to find the holes in the Iowa defense. The team created goal-scoring opportunities but was unable to capitalize.
The Badgers' defense worked overtime in the first half, holding Iowa's offense to only one goal.
Second Half
Wisconsin came out of the break and earned three corner kicks in the first four minutes. The team continued pressure throughout the second half.
The pressure soon paid off, and the Badgers earned a penalty kick in the 74th minute. Aryssa Mahrt took the kick and sank the ball straight into the back of the net. This was Wisconsin's first made penalty kick of the season and Mahrt's second goal in Big Ten play.
